Acting Provincial Commissioner Welcomes Rapist’s 10-Year Sentence
October 30, 2024Operation Vala Umgodi, part of the 2024/2025 Safer Festive Season initiative, has successfully led to the arrest of four suspects linked to illegal mining activities in Mpumalanga. The operation, conducted by the Lydenburg K9 Unit on 25 October 2024 in the Ehlanzeni District, focused on combating unauthorised mining and associated offences, which remain prevalent in the region.
The patrol began along the R533 Pilgrim’s Rest/Graskop Road, where officers observed a maroon Nissan Qashqai carrying multiple occupants. Upon stopping the vehicle, the officers discovered two Mozambican nationals in possession of around 24 small gold nuggets, along with gold-bearing soil. These men were promptly arrested and charged with the illegal possession of precious metals.
A further investigation revealed that the two suspects did not hold valid documentation authorising their presence in South Africa, adding immigration violations to their charges. In a related development during the same operation, two other Mozambican nationals were apprehended in the area for lacking the necessary legal documents. All four suspects now face charges under South Africa’s Immigration Act.
The arrests represent a strategic collaboration between police and officials from the Department of Home Affairs, highlighting the dedication to enforcing South African immigration and mining laws. The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the officers involved, stressing the commitment of law enforcement agencies to tackling illegal mining. “The SAPS is resolute in its commitment to curbing illegal mining activities and ensuring that these unlawful miners are held accountable. We will intensify our operations in regions known for these activities,” stated General Mkhwanazi.
Illegal mining remains a significant issue in Mpumalanga, contributing to environmental degradation and posing safety risks to communities. Operation Vala Umgodi is part of broader national efforts to address this problem, with law enforcement working to increase visibility and control in high-risk areas. Further crackdowns are expected as the SAPS continues its mission to enhance safety during the festive season and beyond.
