October 31, 2024A 32-year-old Zimbabwean national is set to appear before the Barberton Magistrate’s Court following his arrest on 24 October 2024 for possession of a reportedly stolen vehicle. His arrest took place at the junction of the R40 and R38 roads, marking a successful recovery by the Nelspruit Flying Squad, who seized two vehicles and a firearm within 24 hours.
According to information released, the White River Flying Squad was conducting routine patrols when they received an alert from a vehicle tracking company. The alert detailed a vehicle stolen from Westville in KwaZulu-Natal, suspected to be traveling from Badplaas towards Barberton. Acting swiftly, the Flying Squad officers located a white BMW X3 that matched the description. Upon further investigation, they confirmed it was indeed the vehicle reported stolen earlier in October.
The driver, unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing the stolen vehicle, was immediately arrested. Authorities noted that further charges might be added pending ongoing investigations. The suspect’s court appearance is expected soon.
This recovery came just one day after the White River Flying Squad successfully located a hijacked Toyota Yaris, also on the R40. On the night of 24 October, at approximately 23:00, police intercepted the vehicle during a routine patrol. Although the driver initially stopped, he quickly exited and disappeared into nearby bushes. The vehicle was confirmed to have been hijacked at gunpoint in Barberton, prompting police to seize it for further investigation. During a search of the area, officers discovered a firearm abandoned near where the car had been stopped. Both the vehicle and firearm are now part of an ongoing investigation.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed appreciation for the squad’s dedication, commending their swift and efficient response. “We are pleased with the members’ sterling work in removing criminal elements from our roads and making our communities safer,” he stated.
With crime often impacting local and regional safety, the recent recoveries and arrests underscore the importance of coordinated patrols and the role of tracking technology in effective crime prevention. As investigations continue, police remain committed to upholding community security and apprehending those involved in criminal activities.
