Better pay ‘critical’ for teachers
February 26, 2024In a scathing report, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has accused all municipalities in Mpumalanga province of violating residents’ rights due to systemic failures in service delivery.
The SAHRC investigated after receiving numerous complaints about the lack of basic services like water, housing, sanitation, electricity and road maintenance. It concluded that municipalities are severely underperforming and neglecting communities.
“It became evident from the complaints that the delivery of services remains a persisting challenge for these communities residing in Mpumalanga,” said SAHRC Commissioner Philile Ntuli.
The commission ordered the municipalities to submit plans within 90 days on addressing the shortfalls and holding officials accountable. Ntuli said the lack of services has sparked widespread protests in the province.
Residents have complained of sewage spills, dangerous potholes, electricity outages, uncollected garbage and inadequate housing and water access. The SAHRC report paints a damning picture of dysfunctional local governance failing South Africa’s poorest. Urgent action is now required to turn the situation around and restore basic dignity to Mpumalanga communities.
