Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu delivered a wide-ranging Freedom Day address, defending the gains of democracy while acknowledging that many citizens remain unconvinced about the meaning of freedom in South Africa.
Speaking at Masoyi Stadium in Mbombela on 27 April, Ndlovu told residents that freedom must be understood in practical terms.
“Today we celebrate 32 years of freedom. Some ask, ‘what freedom?’ because they say they do not see it,” he said. “But people live in houses provided by government, receive grants, access free education and healthcare, and are able to vote.”
He admitted that expectations remain high, adding: “People expect big things, and they want them now, not tomorrow.”
Drawing on the words of Oliver Tambo, Ndlovu said governing is more difficult than fighting for liberation, and urged patience while government works to improve living conditions. He also echoed Amilcar Cabral, stating: “People are fighting to live better and in peace, and to guarantee the future of their children.”
The Premier highlighted investments in education, including digital devices for pupils and improved school infrastructure. “We do not want our children to see computers for the first time at university,” he said.
On safety and social issues, Ndlovu warned that freedom is incomplete while women and children continue to face abuse. “Our freedom will not be complete while women are still violated and cannot defend themselves,” he said, calling on communities to report offenders and support law enforcement.
He also touched on high-profile cases, including that of Hillary Gardee, insisting that justice must be served. “We want those criminals who killed our people to be arrested and remain in jail,” he said.
Encouraging democratic participation, Ndlovu reminded residents of the importance of voting. “Power resides in the people, not the rulers,” he said. “It is only legitimate when it comes from the population.”
He further urged peaceful elections and respect among political parties, adding that citizens should register during the upcoming voter registration weekend.
However, not all attendees were convinced by the Premier’s message. A Masoyi resident, who identified herself as Nomsa Dlamini, said daily struggles paint a different picture.
“They say we are free, but I don’t feel that freedom,” she said. “There are no jobs, crime is high, and many young people are sitting at home. Freedom should mean a better life, not just promises.”
Ndlovu concluded by calling for unity and cooperation, urging communities to work with government to build a safer and more prosperous province. He invoked the legacy of Chris Hani, reminding residents that the freedoms enjoyed today came at a great cost.
“We must continue to vote and protect this freedom so that it benefits future generations,” he said.
