September 1, 2025Mbombela will take centre stage on Saturday, 13 September, when the 2025 MTN8 Final brings together Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC at the iconic Mbombela Stadium. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) confirmed the venue, giving football lovers in Mpumalanga the rare chance to witness one of the country’s most prestigious cup finals live in their own city.
The MTN8, known as “Wafa Wafa”, is one of South Africa’s most hotly contested tournaments. Orlando Pirates, with their long history of cup success, will be determined to lift another trophy, while Stellenbosch FC aim to underline their rapid rise by toppling one of the giants of local football.
For supporters in and around Mbombela, the final represents more than just a match — it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see two of the best teams in the country competing in their backyard. Fans are being urged to buy tickets early and arrive at the stadium on time to soak up the atmosphere.
While the football is the main attraction, the final is also a boost for the city. Premier Mandla Ndlovu welcomed the PSL’s decision to bring the showcase back to Mpumalanga. “We are absolutely thrilled to host the MTN8 Final. This is not only about football, but also about showcasing the warmth and beauty of our province,” he said.
Ndlovu encouraged visitors to explore Mpumalanga’s renowned tourist attractions, while also calling on local service providers to ensure world-class hospitality. Hotels, guest houses, restaurants and transport operators are all expected to benefit from the influx of supporters.
MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation, Leah Mabuza, echoed the excitement, saying the match would put Mbombela firmly on the sporting map. “The Wafa Wafa Final will not only thrill supporters, it will also prove that our province can successfully host major events,” she said.
With anticipation building, Mbombela is set to come alive as locals join thousands of travelling fans in celebrating one of the highlights of the football calendar.
