Police in Mpumalanga, in collaboration with private security companies, made a significant breakthrough on 27 November 2024 by arresting a 35-year-old man and recovering a cache of firearms, ammunition, and suspected stolen goods.
The joint operation was conducted by the Mpumalanga Tracking Team alongside Fidelity and Divergent Security companies. Acting on intelligence, the team secured a search warrant for a property in Valencia, Nelspruit.
Raid Uncovers Firearms and Goods
When officers arrived at the suspect’s home, he attempted to evade arrest by locking the doors. Police, however, forced entry and discovered:
- A rifle, two shotguns, a pistol, and a .38 revolver, along with dozens of rounds of ammunition.
- Jewelry and wristwatches.
- New, sealed mobile phones from brands like iPhone, Samsung, and Huawei Nova.
- Two vehicles: a silver Toyota Cross and a white Toyota Etios.
The firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine if they were involved in previous crimes.
Charges and Court Appearance
The suspect has been charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of suspected stolen property. He is scheduled to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on 28 November 2024.
Police Commend Operation
Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, lauded the officers and security teams for their swift action.
“This breakthrough is a significant step in removing firearms from our streets, many of which are often linked to criminal activities,” said General Mkhwanazi.
The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement and private security to tackle crime in Mpumalanga.
