February 29, 2024The Mpumalanga Department of Education is mourning the loss of three teachers who
died in a tragic car accident while returning home from a training session.
MEC Bonakele Majuba expressed his deep sadness at the shocking news. “It is really
painful to fathom the loss of our young teachers who were empowering themselves with
the knowledge to impart to our children,” he said.
The three teachers were from Masitakhe and Tikhontele Secondary Schools in
Ehlanzeni District. They had attended a Mathematics, Science and Technology
Academy training in Emalahleni and were heading home when the accident on the N4
claimed their lives.
“Teachers remain a valuable resource for our communities. Losing one is a heavy blow,
let alone three,” said MEC Majuba. “We lower the provincial flag as we mourn in our
hearts.”
The MEC conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished
injured survivors a speedy recovery.
Tomorrow, MEC Majuba will visit the schools and families to pay his respects,
accompanied by department officials who will provide psychosocial support to staff and
learners.

devastating. As the education department mourns, it also renews its commitment to
empowering educators who shape the next generation. Their legacy will live on in the
young minds they inspired.
