January 9, 2025A former police officer, aged 46, and an accomplice, aged 37, were arrested on January 6, 2025, for allegedly defrauding a 71-year-old woman of her pension money at Dayizenza Complex in Masoyi.
On January 3, the victim was reportedly approached by two women while attempting to withdraw money from an ATM. The suspects claimed the ATM had no network and advised her to try a nearby supermarket. Upon arrival, the victim discovered her bank card had been swapped.
The victim later reported the incident to the Hazyview offices, learning that R1,700 had already been withdrawn from her account. Police traced and apprehended the suspects, charging them with fraud.

Their next court appearance is set for January 15, 2025, at the Masoyi Periodical Court.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi commended the investigative team for their swift action and warned against breaking the law, regardless of social standing. He also urged the public to remain vigilant and cautious of scams targeting vulnerable individuals.
