March 22, 2024The Democratic Alliance (DA) has demanded the prompt resignation of National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, who has taken special leave from her position following corruption allegations and a raid at her Johannesburg home on Tuesday.
DA Deputy Chief Whip, Dr Annelie Lotriet, emphasised the necessity for Mapisa-Nqakula to step down to safeguard the integrity of Parliament. Lotriet stated that while Mapisa-Nqakula has taken special leave, resigning is imperative given the possibility of an imminent arrest. Continuing to receive benefits and salary while on leave fails to uphold parliamentary integrity according to Lotriet.
The DA had previously called for Mapisa-Nqakula’s resignation when news first broke of an impending raid on her home related to the corruption allegations. Maintaining her position on special leave is insufficient in the DA’s view to preserve Parliament’s reputation amid the unfolding scandal.
