October 7, 2024The City of Mbombela (CoM) held a council meeting on September 30, focusing on critical issues impacting the municipality. Key items on the agenda included the enhancement of the second phase of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and ongoing negotiations with the city’s water supplier.
Discussions centered around improving the EPWP to ensure it meets national demographic targets, particularly in providing jobs for women, youth, and people with disabilities. Recruitment and selection processes were also reviewed to ensure transparency and fairness.
Executive Mayor Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko provided updates on the reprogramming of electrical prepaid meters through token identifier reprogramming. When asked about the project deadline, she deferred the matter to the next meeting, citing the need for further consultations with Eskom.
The council also explored extending the city’s water supply contract with Silulumanzi, which is set to expire in 2029. Mayor Makushe-Mazibuko recommended that the city manager be authorized to initiate negotiations with Silulumanzi, with a goal of finalizing the contract extension within 60 days. A report is expected to be submitted to the council within 30 days after the conclusion of negotiations.
The meeting marked a significant step in addressing both infrastructure improvements and essential services within the municipality.
