On the 12 February 2024 the Ermelo magistrates court sentenced a 38-year-old man to life imprisonment for rape of a 7 year-old girl. The matter was reported to the Police and after a rape case was opened, an investigation was conducted, which resulted in the arrest of the man. He then went on trial and got convicted hence his sentencing to life imprisonment.
It is said that in March 2019, the accused took advantage of a young girl, who was seven-year-old at the time and raped her in Ermelo as she returned from school.
It was further heard by the court that the accused took the young girl to his shack where he raped her then bribed her with R10 so that she must not tell anyone about the ordeal.
However, the little girl broke her silence after the mother wanted to find out the reason why she returned late from school. It was during this time when she related the sad story to her mother.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has gladly welcomed the hefty sentence handed down to the man and she has also thanked the Investigation team, the Prosecution team and the Judiciary for their collaborative efforts which culminated into this enormous sentence.
