One Arrested After Armed Katjibane Robbery
June 3, 2025Police in Bushbuckridge have made a major breakthrough with the arrest of a 28-year-old man linked to the rape and attempted murder of a 36-year-old woman in the Shatale area near Bushbuckridge.
The incident occurred on 31 May 2025 at approximately 02:00, when the South African Police Service (SAPS) was alerted by medical staff at Mapulaneng Hospital. A severely assaulted woman had been admitted, suffering from facial injuries so serious that she was unable to speak.
Police responded immediately and launched a preliminary investigation. Witness interviews and follow-up leads indicated that the woman was last seen with a known individual in the area. Members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, in collaboration with Bushbuckridge Detectives, acted swiftly to trace and arrest the suspect.
During questioning, the suspect allegedly confessed to the attack and was taken into custody. Further investigation revealed that he was out on bail for a previous rape charge at the time of this crime.
He is expected to appear before the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court on 2 June 2025, facing charges of rape and attempted murder.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, condemned the brutal assault, reaffirming SAPS’s zero tolerance toward gender-based violence.
“The SAPS remains committed to bringing perpetrators of GBV to justice swiftly and ensuring that survivors receive the protection they deserve,” he said.
