A Mpumalanga bank manager and two tellers stand accused of embezzling more than R3.9 million from clients’ accounts through unauthorised transactions dating back to August 2016.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) confirmed that the suspects allegedly enriched themselves with R3 950 941 before their arrest in 2017 by the Nelspruit-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit. They were charged with fraud, theft, and contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
On Monday, 8 September 2025, one of the accused, bank teller Bonginkosi Praise Khoza, pleaded guilty to all charges. He was found guilty and is awaiting sentencing, scheduled for 13 November 2025.
His co-accused, alleged bank manager Selby Khoza and teller Winny Mashaba, have maintained their innocence. Their bail has been extended, and they are expected to appear in court alongside Khoza during sentencing.
Major General Nico Gerber, Provincial Head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, commended the coordinated efforts of the investigative team, which included the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation, Priority Crime Specialised Investigation, the Financial Intelligence Centre, bank investigators, and the National Prosecuting Authority.
