Former home affairs officer sentenced to 10 years for corruption
October 12, 2023Martin Mnisi (29), the eighth accused in a cash-in-transit crime, appeared in Malelane Periodical Court for the first time on Wednesday, October 9.
He is charged with attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlicensed firearm possession, ammunition possession, conspiracy to commit a crime, violation of the Explosives Act, and subverting the objectives of justice.
Mnisi has previously faced identical allegations and appeared in court in KaBokweni and White River, respectively.
On October 3, the Tonga Magistrates’ Court granted bail of R5 000 each to three police officers and four citizens. Mnisi will be joining these individuals.
On August 11, a gang of unknown males allegedly ambushed a Fidelity armoured vehicle on the R570 between Malalane and Schoemansdal.
They were driving a Mercedes-Benz C-Class when they collided with the overturned cash van. It was also claimed that security guards were forced out of the car and that high-calibre guns were deployed on the scene, disarming one security officer.
The case against Mnisi was postponed to October 16 for a formal bail application.
Due to the seriousness of the offences the accused is charged with the state is opposing bail and the accused was remanded in custody pending the outcome of his bail application
