The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has welcomed the hefty sentences that were imposed upon three accused persons, identified as Thomas Joseph Mashaba, Louis Francisco Mathe and Osvald Manyike. The trio was sentenced by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Mbombela on Thursday, 04 July 2024 after the men terrorized the community between 2012 and 2015 in and around Nelspruit.
The court heard how the three accused were involved in series of violent crimes. Some of the crimes committed by these men include house breakings with intent to steal, house robberies, robberies with aggravating circumstances, as well as malicious damage to properties. Subsequent to the crimes committed by the three men, cases were opened and investigated by a dedicated and experienced team. This thorough investigation finally led to the arrest of all three accused persons on 12 February 2015
They eventually appeared in court where bail was denied, leaving them in custody for the period of nine (09) years. After a long trial, in which the state presented a water tight case, the three were convicted then sentenced on Thursday, 04 July 2024 as follows: Mathe was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for house breaking with intend to steal. He was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for another house breaking and theft. For the third house breaking with intend to steal, he was sentenced to 5 years in prisonment. Meanwhile, for the other house breaking with intend to steal, Mathe was sentenced to 5 years behind bars. For malicious damage to property, he was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment. The court ordered that all other counts run concurrently with the count of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Osvald Manyike, on the other hand, was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for house breaking with intend to steal. For the second count of house breaking with intend to rob with aggravating circumstances, Manyike was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment whilst for Contravention of Immigration Act, the accused was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment and for robbery with aggravating circumstances, Manyike was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. The court ordered that all other counts run concurrently with the count of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Thomas Joseph Mashaba sentence to 5 years imprisonment for house breaking with intend to steal and theft. Mashaba was also sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for house breaking with intend to steal and theft. Was also sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances. Mashaba was also sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for house breaking with intend to rob and robbery with aggravating circumstances. As if that was not enough, Mashaba was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for house breaking with an intention to rob and robbery with aggravating circumstances. Sentence to 2 years imprisonment for contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa and also 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
