Public Protector Probes President’s Conduct Allegations
November 27, 2025A 71-year-old Acornhoek woman, Elina Magagula, has been sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment for murder. Magagula was convicted alongside her co-accused, 35-year-old Pleasure Ngobeni, when the Nelspruit Regional Court handed down judgment yesterday.
The case dates back to 2009 when the pair, along with a third accused, the late Solly Zitha, assaulted a woman who had confronted them for allegedly stealing her cattle. An argument broke out during the confrontation, leading to a violent attack in which the victim was severely beaten. She later died from her injuries.
The trio were arrested the following day and subsequently released on bail. Dissatisfied with the progress of the initial investigation, the victim’s family pushed for further action, resulting in the case being transferred to the Hawks’ Nelspruit-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit.
After a lengthy process, the matter was finalised in court. Magagula received a 20-year sentence, while Ngobeni was sentenced to life imprisonment. Zitha passed away in 2024 before the trial commenced.
