The visit highlights the strong, longstanding ties between South Africa and the United Kingdom, deepened by the Royal Family’s connection to the country.
According to a statement from the Presidency, President Ramaphosa and Prince William will discuss “a number of key issues of mutual interest.” The meeting underscores the UK’s continued commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with South Africa.
Prince William is visiting South Africa to host the 4th Annual Earthshot Prize Awards, an event focused on addressing climate change and environmental challenges. The ceremony, scheduled for Wednesday, honours innovative solutions worldwide aimed at tackling environmental degradation and pollution.
President Ramaphosa noted the significance of hosting the Earthshot Prize in South Africa, particularly given the initiative’s focus on the impact of climate change on Africa. “South Africa is pleased to be the host country for this year’s awards, especially because of the focus this initiative places on the impact climate change and environmental degradation have on the African continent,” the President said. He also highlighted that the event has created local employment and given South African artists and designers a global platform to showcase their talent.
Prince William’s visit reflects the shared commitment between the UK and South Africa to addressing critical environmental issues and fostering closer diplomatic relations.
