August 12, 2024Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, has publicly commended the effectiveness of female officers in addressing crime, following the impactful launch of Operation Basadi on the eve of Women’s Day.

Over 230 women from various SAPS units, including the National Intervention Unit and Tactical Response Team, as well as other law enforcement agencies, participated in Operation Basadi. The operation, initiated by Mkwanazi, showcased the proficiency and resolve of these officers, resulting in the arrest of 37 suspects involved in various crimes.
The operation also led to significant seizures, including drugs and materials used in illegal mining—highlighting the broad scope of the police’s crackdown on crime. Items recovered included 22.5 kilograms of dagga, equipment for illegal mining, and multiple illegal weapons.
The operation was particularly noteworthy for the arrest of a 24-year-old man wanted for multiple rape cases, illustrating the operation’s focus on combating severe crimes, including those against women and children.

Major General Dorah Xaba, the senior officer leading the operation, emphasized the strategic execution and collaborative effort of the female officers, stating that their success should serve as a beacon of hope and a testament to their vital role within the police force.
In his address, Mkwanazi reaffirmed his confidence in the capabilities of women officers and stressed their crucial contribution to public safety. “Their exceptional dedication not only reflects their commitment to justice but also their integral role in our continuous efforts to ensure safety and uphold the law,” he commented, ensuring that the celebration of Women’s Day includes recognising the substantial contributions of women in law enforcement.
