March 28, 2024As the Easter long weekend approaches, South African road users are being advised to exercise heightened caution while travelling. Traffic volumes are anticipated to increase, coupled with the concerning trend of increasing road fatalities during this period in recent years.
Statistics reveal that the 2022 Easter period witnessed over 160 recorded road deaths, while that figure escalated to an overwhelming 225 last year. These alarming numbers underscore the importance for all motorists to prioritise safety measures.
The Automobile Association’s Eleanor Mavimbela has emphasized the need for the government to strengthen its efforts by considering a 50% increase in the number of traffic law enforcement officials and enhancing visible policing nationwide. She urged drivers to adhere to speed limits, ensure seatbelt usage, maintain vigilant mirror checks, and take breaks when fatigued.
Mavimbela expressed concern that past government campaigns during peak seasons like Easter have yielded limited impact on reducing fatalities, advocating for the adoption of a revamped approach to address this pressing issue more effectively.
As South Africans prepare to hit the roads for the Easter festivities, all stakeholders, including authorities and the public, are called upon to unite in promoting responsible driving practices and heightened awareness to curb the tragic loss of lives on the country’s roads.
