The horrific accident claimed 17 lives, leaving only one survivor—a baby girl—who is currently receiving medical care in hospital.
Details of the Crash
The collision occurred amid heavy rainfall, and investigators are considering several contributing factors, including speed, vehicle defects, and possible recklessness on the part of the minibus driver.
The truck driver, a Zimbabwean national, reportedly contacted his employer before fleeing the scene. Authorities are working to locate him.
Investigative Efforts
A detailed report from Ndabezinhle Sibiya, spokesperson for MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, confirmed the casualty numbers and outlined the investigation process.
A technical team comprising the Department of Transport, Road Traffic Inspectorate, South African National Road Agency, and South African Police Service (SAPS) met under the leadership of Major General Gonya, the Cluster Commander of Thukela District, to initiate a thorough probe into the crash.
Support for the Survivor
MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has requested the Head of the Department and the investigation team to visit the baby girl in hospital, calling her “the brave little girl.”
