President Cyril Ramaphosa has reappointed Professor Vusi Gumede, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Development, and Business Sciences at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP), to the Presidential Economic Advisory Council for the Seventh Administration. This marks Gumede’s continued role, having first joined the council during the Sixth Administration.
An Esteemed Career
Prof Gumede brings a wealth of experience to the council, with senior government roles and an illustrious academic career spanning over a decade. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, earned at the age of 27, along with a postgraduate qualification in public policy and leadership.
In academia, he has served as a professor at the University of Johannesburg and the University of South Africa, where he directed the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute. He joined UMP in 2019 and has been instrumental in mentoring future leaders, having supervised 18 doctoral and 10 master’s students to completion. Gumede has authored 16 books and numerous scholarly articles, contributing significantly to economic thought and policy.
Advisory Council Role
The council advises on key areas such as macroeconomics, labour economics, urban development, and strategies for addressing poverty and inequality. Its work aims to guide the Seventh Administration in achieving sustainable economic growth and job creation.
Reflecting on his reappointment, Gumede expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving. “It is an honour to contribute to our government and society. The reappointment signals a vote of confidence in the work we’ve done and the impact of our contributions during the Sixth Administration,” he said.
