Man Remanded for Possession of Counterfeit Goods Worth R3.5 Million
December 10, 2024Two suspects were arrested in Mbombela on December 5 for allegedly tampering with and damaging infrastructure in the Sabie area.
Provincial Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Dineo Sekgotodi said the arrests followed information about a person arranging for a logistics company to transport stolen steel from Mbombela to Germiston. The investigating officer was provided with details of the truck involved.
The operation included the Nelspruit Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, Fidelity Security, the flying squad, and the tactical response team, which tracked the vehicles using GPS coordinates.
“Two vehicles were intercepted—a Hyundai bakkie loaded with three cut railway tracks and a white UD truck with a horse and trailer carrying more railway tracks,” Sekgotodi explained. Both vehicles were seized, and the drivers were arrested, charged, and detained in Sabie.
Sekgotodi confirmed the steel was stolen from the Sabie area, though investigators are still working to identify the intended destination.
“At this stage, we don’t know where they were transporting the steel since only the drivers were arrested. We need to locate the vehicle owners and uncover the final destination,” she added.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Sabie Magistrate’s Court on December 9. They remain in custody pending further investigations.
