February 23, 2024Thungela, a coal mining company, on Friday February 25, launched an innovative fish breeding facility at
Loskop Dam Nature Reserve in Mpumalanga. The facility aims to restore aquatic life in
the Wilge-Olifants River system following an uncontrolled mine water release at
Thungela’s Khwezela Colliery in February 2022.
Thungela took full accountability and committed to rehabilitating the affected areas. In
partnership with the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) and aquatic
scientists, Thungela developed an approved rehabilitation plan focusing on biodiversity
enhancement. A key initiative was establishing the fish breeding facility to accelerate
the recovery of fish populations.
At the launch event, Thungela CEO July Ndlovu said he was proud to fulfil Thungela’s
commitment as a responsible miner to fully implement the rehabilitation plan. This has
restored the environment to an even better condition than before the incident, reflecting
Thungela’s dedication to sustainability per its Environmental, Social and Governance
Framework.
With water quality returned to pre-incident levels and macroinvertebrate activity
resurging, the timing is right to restock fish. The facility will breed and release up to 16
native fish species until populations reach pre-incident density.
MTPA CEO Mduduzi Vilakazi praised the collaboration as a model for conserving
natural resources through partnerships between economic entities and conservation
authorities.
The launch highlights Thungela’s accountability and ongoing commitment to responsible
environmental stewardship. The company will continue to provide updates as
rehabilitation proceeds to achieve full ecological restoration.
