September 30, 2024The Springboks brought joy to the nation by defeating Argentina 48-7, securing the Castle Lager Rugby Championship for the first time in five years. The reigning World Cup champions delivered a dominant performance at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on the evening of 28 September, leading 27-7 at half-time.
“The win was never in doubt after the Springboks – celebrating a new Test record for Eben Etzebeth (128 caps) – had a sublime start that had the sold-out crowd of 43,578 in raptures,” noted SA Rugby in their match report. The first 15 minutes saw the Boks control the game, leaving the crowd breathless.
Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, praised Etzebeth, referring to him as a warrior. “On behalf of South Africa, I would like to acknowledge a warrior of SA, a man that donned the green and gold shirt 128 times in service to his country. You have done so much for us and rugby. You are a true role model,” McKenzie said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The Springboks scored seven tries during their victory. “A crowd of 43,578 celebrated as the Springboks scored seven tries to claim the southern hemisphere crown for the first time since 2019 – the most tries they have scored in a match in the competition since their 73-13 win over Argentina in 2013,” SA Rugby reported.
