May 14, 2024South Africa’s tourism sector continues to flourish, attracting a steady influx of international visitors from various corners of the globe.
Statistics South Africa’s latest release of international arrival figures for January to March 2024 reveals a notable uptick, with the country welcoming a total of 2.4 million visitors. This represents a remarkable 15.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille has lauded this surge in international travelers, recognizing its significant contribution to the economy and job creation. “We are committed to sustaining this positive momentum. South Africa remains an alluring and accessible destination for travelers worldwide,” the Minister stated.
Of the total arrivals, 1.8 million tourists hailed from the African continent, accounting for an impressive 74.5% of all arrivals. Zimbabwe and Ghana particularly stood out, with Zimbabwe experiencing a 21.8% increase in arrivals and Ghana witnessing a staggering 249.4% surge. The exponential growth in Ghana’s arrivals can be attributed to the visa-waiver scheme implemented in November 2023, coupled with targeted marketing efforts by South African Tourism.
International travelers from the Americas also showed increased interest, with arrivals totaling 118,194, reflecting a 12.4% growth compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, European markets demonstrated strength, with 420,727 arrivals, marking an 8.6% increase. Key European source markets such as the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Russia recorded notable growth rates.
The Asian markets displayed significant growth as well, with arrivals totaling 49,741, representing a remarkable 25.4% increase. Notably, China saw an impressive 82% surge in arrivals, while India witnessed a slight decline of 0.9%.
In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates also contributed to the surge in arrivals, with notable increases of 31.7% and 321 arrivals, respectively.
