Government Struggles to Eradicate Mud Houses
February 7, 2025South Africa is intensifying efforts to combat corruption by equipping law enforcement agencies with better resources, stronger legislation, and advanced digital tools.
Permanent Anti-Corruption Directorate
In his State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Cyril Ramaphosa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling corruption, highlighting the establishment of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) as a permanent unit within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
“We will ensure that the directorate is fully resourced and has access to all necessary information to prosecute state capture cases and hold those responsible to account,” said the President.
Cutting-Edge Forensic Tools
To bolster investigations into financial crimes and corruption, South Africa is setting up a world-class digital forensics lab equipped with advanced tools and expertise.
Recovering Stolen Funds
The government is actively recovering money lost to corruption and state capture. According to the President:
“The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) have already recovered over R10 billion linked to state capture cases.”
He also confirmed that multiple legislative reforms have been signed into law based on the Zondo Commission’s recommendations.
Strengthening Anti-Corruption Laws
Efforts are underway to streamline anti-corruption legislation and enhance cooperation among law enforcement agencies. Key initiatives include:
✅ A review of anti-corruption laws by the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council
✅ The Whistleblower Protections Bill, set to be introduced in Parliament this financial year
✅ Measures to prevent duplication of mandates among agencies
Fighting Money Laundering and Greylist Removal
South Africa was placed on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) greylist due to concerns about money laundering and terror financing. However, the government has made significant progress in addressing 16 out of 22 action items required for removal.
“We have strengthened our law enforcement system and will implement further legislative and system improvements this year,” Ramaphosa assured the nation.
With stronger institutions, better oversight, and global best practices, South Africa is taking decisive steps to eliminate corruption and restore public trust. 🚨💰
