December 18, 2024Large parts of South Africa’s interior have endured an intense heatwave during the first half of December, leading to record-breaking temperatures across several provinces, both in maximum and minimum levels, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).
Heatwave and Drought Concerns
The heatwave has coincided with significantly below-average rainfall in the central and eastern interior, resulting in drought-like conditions and low water levels in catchment areas. Unfortunately, this dry spell is expected to persist for the central interior over the next week, with only isolated thunderstorms predicted.
Rainfall Relief for Eastern Provinces
The eastern provinces, however, are expected to receive much-needed relief in the form of substantial rainfall in the coming week. SAWS predicts tropical moisture and favourable weather conditions will bring between 70mm and 150mm of rainfall to parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern Free State, eastern North West, and southern and western Limpopo.
This increased rainfall comes with its own risks. “The significant rainfall is likely to elevate the risk of flooding,” warned the SAWS. Residents are urged to stay updated with short-term weather forecasts and heed any warnings issued.
Cooling Temperatures in the East
The rainfall and accompanying cloud cover are expected to provide some relief from the recent heat, cooling temperatures in the eastern regions of the country.
Weather Outlook for December 19 and 20
- December 19:
Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are forecast over the central and eastern regions, with widespread rainfall expected in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. Severe thunderstorms could bring heavy downpours, localised flooding, damaging winds, and hail in areas such as Gauteng, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and southern Limpopo. - December 20:
Isolated showers and thundershowers are predicted over the north-eastern regions, with scattered rain expected in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and the eastern parts of North West. Light rain is also forecast for the south coast.
Public Advisory
SAWS strongly advises the public to monitor weather updates, remain cautious during severe weather, and prepare for potential localised flooding in affected areas.
