Kruger National Park Staff Honoured for Excellence
November 10, 2025Residents of Cork and Saringwa in Ward 23, Bushbuckridge, are celebrating a new era of clean water access following the official handover of solar-powered boreholes that promise to change daily life for hundreds of families.
The project was delivered through a partnership between Innovation: Africa, Kruger Gate Hotel, and the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality (BLM), with Mbileni Engineers as the implementing contractor. It forms part of a broader initiative to bring sustainable water solutions to rural areas that have long struggled with unreliable supply and failing infrastructure.
For years, villagers in Saringwa and surrounding sections have faced persistent water shortages, relying on streams or purchasing water from vendors at high cost. Now, with the installation of solar-powered pumps, storage tanks, and communal taps, many residents say they finally have access to safe and consistent water.
“This project has brought relief to us,” said community member Maria Mhlongo, who lives near one of the newly installed taps. “Before, we used to wake up at dawn to fetch water far from home, but now our children can go to school clean and on time.”
Closing the gap in access to clean water
The initiative highlights the critical role that partnerships can play in bridging the service-delivery gap in rural municipalities like Bushbuckridge. By using solar energy, the boreholes eliminate the need for costly electricity connections and ensure round-the-clock operation even in off-grid areas.
Beyond improving water access, the project has created local jobs and offered training opportunities to young people. Several residents were employed during the construction phase and received hands-on training in borehole drilling, plumbing, and solar maintenance — skills that can help them start small businesses or secure future employment.
For communities where job opportunities are scarce, this approach not only addresses immediate needs but also contributes to long-term empowerment.
Partnership for sustainable change
The involvement of the private sector, particularly Kruger Gate Hotel, reflects a growing awareness among local businesses of the importance of investing in surrounding communities. Through collaboration with Innovation: Africa and the municipality, the hotel has helped ensure that development extends beyond its tourism footprint to directly benefit nearby villages.
Local residents say they hope similar projects will reach other wards that still face chronic water shortages.
“We are grateful, but we also hope more villages can get the same help,” added Mhlongo. “Water should not be a luxury — it’s something every family deserves.”
Looking ahead
As Bushbuckridge continues to face challenges in service delivery, such public-private partnerships are offering practical solutions that align with community needs. The solar-powered boreholes represent more than just infrastructure — they symbolise dignity, sustainability, and progress for the people who have waited far too long for reliable access to one of life’s most basic necessities.
