The Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation says progress is being made to address youth unemployment and scarce skills. Buti Manamela spoke in Durban at the World Skills South Africa National Competition. The event sees young people compete in over 20 artisan skills.
Winners will represent South Africa at the World Skills event in France in September. Manamela said the competition helps learn from other countries on skills training, especially in TVET colleges. It also promotes collaboration with the private sector to employ graduates. “World Skills has made a tremendous skills revolution,” he stated.
The Deputy Minister added that the competition allows the country to collaborate with the private sector to place young people in the workplace so they can be immediately employed once they graduate. He emphasized that initiatives like World Skills are key to tackling the challenges of youth unemployment and scarce skills that South Africa faces. The aim is to not only upskill youth but also ensure they can transition seamlessly into employment after completing their training.
