New Mpumalanga BMF Chair Advocates for Inclusive Leadership
October 23, 2024Given Chiloane, a 20-year-old artistic roller skater from Simile (Sabie), is determined to establish himself as one of Mpumalanga’s finest skating talents. Chiloane recently represented South Africa as part of Roller Sport South Africa’s Artistic Skating Senior Quartet at the World Skate Games Italia 2024. The event, held in Rimini, Italy, on September 21, marked a significant milestone in his skating journey. Despite the quartet finishing last, he views the experience as invaluable, both in terms of exposure and personal growth.
Being the only representative from Mpumalanga, Chiloane found the opportunity to perform on an international stage thrilling and eye-opening. “Skating has opened many doors for me,” he said. “Competing at such a prestigious event was an amazing experience. The atmosphere in Italy was refreshing, and it was inspiring to see so many talented skaters from around the world. We faced tough competition, but we also learned a lot by observing and skating alongside the best.”
Chiloane’s skating journey began in 2018 when he joined the Sabie Roller Skating Club. He initially participated in soccer as an extracurricular activity, but his passion for skating was ignited after seeing people skate around his community. “I instantly fell in love with skating,” he recalled. “I asked my mother if I could join the club, but she couldn’t afford the fees or the gear. It was my grandmother who gave me the R30 I needed to join the club, which allowed me to pursue my interest.”
Starting as a speed skater, Chiloane eventually transitioned into artistic skating to broaden his experience and skills. His dedication paid off when he participated in the national championships, leading to his selection for trials for the World Skate Games. The chance to compete at an international level has only fueled his ambition further.
Chiloane now envisions a promising career in skating, with aspirations of one day competing in the Olympic Games. “I hope to see roller skating gain more recognition as a competitive sport in South Africa,” he said. “We are also hopeful that Roller Sport South Africa will get the opportunity to host the World Skate Games in 2028. It would be a fantastic platform for local talent to shine and for the sport to grow in the country.”
Currently unemployed, Chiloane is looking to further his education by enrolling in a sports management program at a tertiary institution. He believes that gaining formal education in sports management will not only help him understand the business side of sports but also empower him to advocate for the development of roller skating in South Africa.
Chiloane’s story is a testament to his perseverance and passion for skating. With the right support and opportunities, he hopes to inspire others in his community to pursue their dreams, regardless of the obstacles they may face.
