February 22, 2024An off-duty police sergeant was fatally shot just meters from his home in Balfour,
Mpumalanga on Saturday night. 45-year-old Sgt. Mandla Alex Nhleko of the Grootvlei
police station was gunned down while outside his residence, sustaining multiple
gunshot wounds to his upper body according to police.
Nhleko, a 16-year veteran of the South African Police Service, was rushed to a nearby
clinic by family but tragically succumbed to his injuries upon arrival. Police officials
condemned the brutal murder of one of their own.
Circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, including motive, as the high-
profile case is now being handled by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
Nhleko’s murder marks yet another tragic loss of an officer killed while off-duty. Police
leadership decried the violence, saying attacks on police, whether on or off the job, are
unacceptable and compromise public safety.
They urged anyone with information about Sgt. Nhleko’s killing is to come forward
immediately so those responsible can be brought to justice.
