February 1, 2024Teaching and learning have been disrupted at several schools in Matsulu, South Africa, following the appointment of a new circuit manager. Teacher unions met to express dissatisfaction with the appointment and deliberate solutions, prompting criticism from the National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB).
“We want to raise serious concern about the disruption of teaching and learning in the Nkululeko circuit,” said NASGB regional secretary Sipho Motha. “The unions are uncomfortable with the new acting circuit manager.”
Parents voiced concern about the impact on their children’s education. “It’s painful because children must study and pass,” said one parent. Another parent pleaded for a quick resolution, noting “Children who are supposed to rewrite matric exams are being left behind.”
The provincial Education Department promised to address the unions’ demands. Spokesperson Gerald Sambo said, “An agreement was reached that learning will resume while the department looks into their demands.”
SADTU cautioned against continued disruption. The department said it will work with affected schools to make up lost time. But the circuit manager change has clearly caused an unwelcome interruption in Matsulu’s schools.
