South Africa now has 30 Ramsar wetlands sites after De Berg Nature Reserve in Mpumalanga was recently declared one. A Ramsar site is a wetland of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Minister Barbara Creecy welcomed the new Ramsar site, saying “The conservation of wetlands is crucial to achieving sustainable development goals.”
Located along the Dwars River headwaters north of Dullstroom at over 2,300m elevation, De Berg contains the highest altitude wetlands in Mpumalanga. The pristine valley streams and seeps represent some of the most biodiverse and habitat diverse watercourses in the grassland biome. The hotspot supports many threatened, endangered and vulnerable species of plants and animals. With 878 plant species including 30 threatened ones and a new bulbous species, plus diverse bird, reptile, amphibian and mammal populations, De Berg is a jewel among South Africa’s wetland treasures.
