The official population of South Africa, according to Statistics SA, is currently 62.027 million, up 10.3 million (19.8%) from 2011.
Stats SA announced the new population figures at an event at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Tuesday, where statistician general Risenga Maluleke handed over the results to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
With 15.1 million residents, Gauteng is still the most populated province, followed by KwaZulu-Natal (12.1 million). The Northern Cape and Free State have the lowest population sizes, with 1,3 million and 2,9 million, respectively.
The results show that the female population was 31 948 745 while the male population was 30 078 757 in 2022.
50.5 million of South Africa’s population are black Africans, and the white population has declined again in 2022.
“That is the account for 81.4 per cent of the population. The coloured (population) grew to 5.1 million (and) accounted for 8.1 per cent the white population group accounts for 4.5 million accounting for 7.3 per cent and the Indian/Asian group – 1.7 million accounted for 2.7 per cent and Others, and those who didn’t specify, at 200 000.”
The most spoken language is Isizulu, followed by isiXhosa, and then Afrikaans.
According to Maluleke, the percentage of households living in informal settlements increased significantly to 88.5% between 20211 and 2022.
It makes it difficult for the government to supply the rising demand for utilities like water and electricity.
Stas SA claims that the Eastern Cape and Limpopo still do not have better access to piped water.
There were 55,719 homeless persons as of February 2022, with the majority of them living in Gauteng (25,384), KwaZulu-Natal (7,768), and the Western Cape (9,743). The primary cause of this was unemployment.
