June 18, 2024A Former Warrant Officer Appears in Court for Defeating the Ends of Justice and Tampering with Evidence

Mpumalanga – Samuel Bassie Mahlangu, a 60-year-old former Warrant Officer and current pensioner, appeared before the Delmas Magistrates Court on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. He faces charges of defeating the ends of justice and tampering with evidence.
Mahlangu’s court appearance followed after he was served with a J175 on May 14, 2024, by the Middelburg-based Serious Corruption Investigation unit. The docket was referred to them for further investigation.
The charges stem from an incident on August 1, 2023, when members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) and National Crime Intelligence (NCI) conducted an operation targeting illegal mining activities. During the operation, gold-bearing materials were seized and booked into the SAPS 13 exhibits register at Delmas Police Station, with Mahlangu signing for the items.
The following day, an NCI member returned to the police station to retrieve the exhibit. Mahlangu claimed he was unaware that the items were exhibits and subsequently led the officers to a bin at the back of the station where he had discarded the materials without making a disposal order entry.
Following an investigation, Mahlangu was issued a J175, compelling him to appear in court on June 18, 2024. The case has been postponed to June 27, 2024, for further investigation.
This development underscores the ongoing efforts to address corruption and misconduct within law enforcement agencies, ensuring accountability and integrity in the handling of evidence and criminal cases.
