December 5, 2024Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu will visit Sabie on December 5 to assess and support the ongoing efforts to rescue trapped illegal miners, or zama zamas, from an abandoned mine.
The visit comes after several fatalities were confirmed following a shootout at the site, with around 10 individuals taken into custody.
“The premier is deeply concerned about the rampant illegal mining activities in the province and their severe risks to human life,” said his spokesperson, George Mthethwa.
Ndlovu plans to engage with members of the search-and-rescue teams, including police and security personnel, and will monitor the operation’s progress firsthand.
This marks the premier’s second visit to an illegal mining site in the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality this year. “In September, he visited Pilgrim’s Rest, where a group of illegal miners was arrested,” added Mthethwa.
Ndlovu’s visit underscores the provincial government’s focus on addressing illegal mining and the grave challenges it poses to safety and security in Mpumalanga.
