Eskom Targets Year Without Load Shedding
January 21, 2025Nelspruit police have arrested two suspects in connection with the possession and dealing of dagga worth an estimated R2.4 million. The arrests occurred on January 19, 2025, during a routine checkpoint along the R38 Road in Low’s Creek, Mpumalanga.
The suspects, aged 31 and 39, were traveling in a white Hyundai bakkie with Mpumalanga registration plates when they were stopped by members of the Proactive and Combat Team under Operation Vala Umgodi. The operation aims to combat illegal activities through intensified vehicle checkpoints and stop-and-search procedures across the province.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered 15 large bags filled with dagga hidden inside the bakkie. The confiscated dagga weighed approximately 644.14 kilograms, with a street value estimated at R2.4 million. The discovery led to the immediate arrest of the two suspects.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the men were traveling from Louville near Low’s Creek and were en route to Matsulu when they were intercepted. Authorities believe the dagga was likely destined for illegal distribution within the region.
The suspects are now facing charges of possession and dealing in dagga. They are scheduled to appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on January 21, 2025, where the case will proceed.
This successful operation highlights the effectiveness of proactive policing strategies under Operation Vala Umgodi. The initiative is part of the Mpumalanga police’s broader efforts to crack down on drug trafficking and other illicit activities that threaten the safety and well-being of communities in the province.
Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga police, commended the officers involved in the operation. “This seizure demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement to disrupt drug trafficking networks and ensure that communities are protected from the harm caused by illegal substances,” said Ndubane.
Authorities have urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking or other crimes. Information can be shared anonymously via the Crime Stop number, 08600 10111, or through the My SAPS app.
As the investigation continues, police are working to determine whether the suspects are linked to a larger drug syndicate operating in the area. Their arrests mark a significant step in the ongoing fight against illegal drug trade in Mpumalanga.
