The rural municipality of Thulamahashe in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, received a
boost yesterday with the opening of a new community hall and child care centre.
Provincial MEC Speed Mashilo handed over the state-of-the-art facilities, which he said
would enhance municipal revenue and promote arts, recreation and early childhood
development in the area.
The 750-capacity hall is expected to host various community events and generate
income for the municipality. Meanwhile, the child care centre consists of three
classrooms, restrooms and play areas to support early learning for local children.
MEC Mashilo urged residents to maintain the facilities for long-term benefit. “We are
doing this for the greater good of our communities and to see them thrive,” he said.
Local Mayor Sylvia Nxumalo also called on residents to protect the facilities from
vandalism. She thanked the provincial government for the development, which she said
would uplift the rural community.
The MEC stressed the importance of early childhood development in preparing children
for formal education. The facilities cost R23 million to construct and provided 37 local
jobs. More social amenities are planned throughout the province.
