October 22, 2024Congratulations are in order for the U15 boys and girls who were crowned winners of the CAF African Schools Football Championship at Jan Wilken Stadium in Walvis Bay. The tournament took place from 11 to 12 October, showcasing the talent and determination of young athletes from across the region.
Among the victorious players were three remarkable girls: Nkosingiphile Mthombeni from Moduping Combined School in Marite, and Lizzy Khoza and Whitney Havene, both from St Mark’s High School. These young athletes proudly represented Mpumalanga, reflecting the province’s commitment to nurturing sporting talent.

Their journey to the national team began at the interschool level, where they showcased their skills and determination. They successfully progressed through the circuit, district, and provincial levels, ultimately reaching the national stage in Sturrock Park, Braamfontein, where they faced off against the best players in the country.
During the weekend’s matches, the girls’ team secured a commendable 3-1 victory against Malawi. The boys’ championship match against Zambia, however, ended in a nail-biting draw of 1-1 after regular time. South Africa triumphed in the penalty shootout, winning 4-2 and securing their championship title.
Leah Mabuza, the MEC for Culture, Sports, and Recreation, expressed her pride in the achievements of the teams. “The province stands behind them all the way. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments,” she stated. Mabuza also extended her gratitude to everyone who contributed to the players’ rise to the national team.
“We are the champions! Well done, boys and girls of Mzansi,” she exclaimed, celebrating the success of the young athletes. Mabuza highlighted the significance of investing in both education and sports, emphasising that this dual focus can empower young people and transform their lives. “We want our youth to build their future through their talents,” she added.
Mpumalanga was well represented at this CAF-sanctioned tournament, showcasing the province’s commitment to fostering talent at the grassroots level. Nyiko Manzini, attached to the department’s Gert Sibande office, was appointed as the safeguarding officer and team manager for the boys’ team. With over 20 years of experience in sport and recreation, Manzini is well-equipped to support the boys as they prepare to compete in the South-West Coast of Africa.
The success of the U15 boys and girls is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent of young athletes in Mpumalanga, inspiring the next generation to pursue their sporting dreams.
