February 8, 2024MEC for Education Bonakele Majuba recently directed principals in Mpumalanga’s
Bohlabela District to take action to improve declining matric pass rates. Speaking at a
meeting, MEC Majuba acknowledged a 10% decrease in the district’s 2023 Grade 12
results.
“Instead of dwelling solely on the negatives, let us use this moment to ignite a shared
passion, unity of purpose for sustainable improvement of results from grade R to Grade
12 in this District,” he urged.
The MEC reminded principals of the country’s 30th anniversary of democracy this year.
“We have no choice but to deliver quality education, especially for the children of the
working class and the poor, whose only hope for survival depends on what each and
every one of us here, do on a daily basis,” he said.
While acknowledging challenges like COVID-19 disruptions, MEC Majuba called for a
collaborative, solution-oriented approach. He highlighted successes like the 10,683
Bohlabela learners who passed matric in 2023. “Let us leverage the expertise,
experiences and resources across all districts to create a collaborative support system,”
he stated.
The MEC directed principals to develop improvement plans with clear targets and
timelines. He emphasized continuous learning and innovation. “Together, we can
change the current narrative, improve the current status quo and transform this
challenge into an opportunity for remarkable growth and lasting impact,” MEC Majuba
concluded.
