December 3, 2024Austin Snethemba Mashabane, 24, was tragically shot dead after being robbed following the Summer Blaze event at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga early on 1 December 2024.
According to police reports, Mashabane was with a female companion when they were accosted by two armed men in the stadium’s parking lot at around 01:21. The incident has left the local community in shock.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed the robbery and subsequent shooting, stating that Nelspruit police were called to the scene shortly after the attack. Upon arrival, officers found the woman who informed them that her friend had been shot by two armed suspects.
She explained that the two men had approached them, robbed Mashabane of his mobile phone, and forcibly seized her handbag. During the robbery, Mashabane was shot. Paramedics arrived shortly after and declared him dead at the scene.
Mdhluli identified the victim as Austin Mashabane, noting that the woman, who was unharmed, witnessed the horrific event. The suspects fled the scene, leaving the victim in a critical condition.
Police have opened investigations into armed robbery and murder, and efforts are ongoing to identify the perpetrators. No arrests have been made as of yet, and authorities are calling on anyone with information to come forward.
“We urge anyone who has information that can assist with the investigation to contact the police,” Mdhluli said. He further assured the public that all information received will be treated confidentially.
