Eight years after a burglary case where a firearm was stolen from a home in
Chrissiesmeer, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has made a breakthrough
arrest. Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Semakaleng Daphney Manamela commended the
detectives for their exceptional work in apprehending suspect Bheki Joseph Bhembe
(36) on March 8th and recovering the stolen firearm and ammunition inside an old
reservoir.
The burglary occurred in September 2015 when an unknown suspect broke into a home
and stole a firearm from a safe while the owner was away. After a meticulous
investigation spanning years, the detectives tracked down Bhembe and executed his
arrest. With the assistance of the White River Diving Unit, the firearm and ammunition
were retrieved from an old reservoir in the same area.
Bhembe appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on March 11th and is expected to
apply for bail at his next appearance today, March 18th. Lt. Gen. Manamela
emphasized the breakthrough as a testament to the detective services’ capability to
solve even the most challenging cases. She encouraged victims of crime to engage with
investigating officers and station commanders if dissatisfied with the progress of their
cases, stressing the importance of providing relevant information.
The Commissioner praised the detectives’ dedication and diligence in cracking an eight-
year-old case, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to justice and public safety.
