Kholizwe Masina, 41, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Mbombela on July 18, 2024. Masina was found guilty of murdering the Chairperson of the Taxi Association in Barberton. The court heard that Masina was hired by a taxi owner to kill the victim. However, there was no proof linking the taxi owner to the crime, and they were set free.
The incident occurred on February 11, 2021, when Masina found the victim fixing his vehicle in Barberton. Masina shot and killed him, and the murder was reported to the police. After an intense investigation, Masina was arrested in March 2021 and has been in custody since then.
Masina has a history of violent crimes, including previous convictions for rape, murder, and robbery. He terrorized the community of Pienaar between 2001 and 2005. Along with his life sentence for murder, Masina received an additional two years for possessing an unlicensed firearm and was declared unfit to own a firearm.
Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, welcomed the sentence and praised the investigating officer for their excellent work in ensuring Masina will spend life behind bars.
