December 5, 2024Former Kaizer Chiefs player, Willard Katsande, has expressed concern over the team’s lack of strong leadership, attributing their sluggish performance in the Betway Premiership to this deficiency.
After a disappointing 10th-place finish in the league last season, Chiefs had hoped for a strong start in the new campaign. However, with just one win in their last five league matches, they currently sit in sixth place with 11 points from seven games.
The team’s most recent draw against Royal AM, where they squandered a 2-0 lead, has intensified the pressure. Chiefs’ coach, Nasreddine Nabi, was quick to criticize the players for what he called a “lack of professionalism” following the disappointing result.
Katsande, who won several titles with the club, believes that the squad is missing key leaders who can guide the team through challenging moments. He stressed the need for both a strong midfielder and a reliable striker, but emphasized that leadership is a crucial area for improvement.
“They need a hard man in midfield and a striker,” Katsande told FarPost. “However, there is also a lack of leaders. You need people who can keep their heads cool.”
Echoing Nabi’s criticism, Katsande added that the team requires a significant amount of time to rebuild. He believes Nabi needs at least four transfer windows to fully address the team’s shortcomings and foster a more professional environment.
“There are some encouraging signs, but Chiefs need at least four transfer windows under Nabi to set things right,” Katsande concluded. “At least he didn’t single out certain departments. He spoke about the whole team, and they know they should have done better.”
