February 2, 2024Daily Sun journalist Oris Mnisi was hospitalized after allegedly being assaulted by
security guards at Thulamahashe Mall last Thursday. The attack occurred while Mnisi
was investigating rotten fish sold at Roots Butchery.
After consuming fish that made him ill, Mnisi returned to gather evidence and protect
others from harm. But taking photos prompted security to be called. Guards then
attacked Mnisi, damaging his camera and locking him in a room for hours, he claims.
With intervention from media colleagues and police, Mnisi was finally released from his
captivity. He spent a night at Tintswalo Hospital recovering. Mnisi has pressed charges
against the TSB Security Company for the violent incident.
Press freedom advocates condemned the alleged assault. Mnisi was pursuing a
legitimate public interest story on tainted food. Journalists nationwide face dangers for
simply doing their jobs. Abuse and violence against reporters must end now. Justice
must be served in this troubling case.
