February 5, 2024A Limpopo man was arrested for allegedly assaulting his pregnant wife with a hot iron during an argument about a cell phone on Friday morning. The assault occurred in Seleteng Ga-Mphahlele and left the victim with severe burns on both hands. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the husband fled after the incident. “Police were alerted about the assault and opened a case against the suspect,” Ledwaba said. The man was swiftly tracked down and arrested in Ga Mphahlele Makurung the same day.
Investigations are ongoing. Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Major-General Jan Scheepers urged abused women to report domestic violence and not feel sympathy for their attackers. “You are encouraged to report these cases without feeling sorry for someone who abuses you,” Scheepers said.
The disturbing assault highlights the ongoing scourge of domestic violence in South Africa. With the victim hospitalized and her unborn child put at risk, this attack underscores the need for society to take a strong stand against the abuse of women. Police must send a clear message that such cruelty will not be tolerated as they pursue justice in this case.
