Attorney Faces Fraud Charges for Pocketing Client Payouts
December 13, 2023A motorist whose dangerous flight to elude arrest ended in a rollover crash now faces three years probation after confessing to transporting a major marijuana shipment late last year. His guilty plea and sentencing on Friday, December 8 capped a case originating after concerned locals tipped authorities about suspicious activity.
Acting on intelligence relayed by residents, K9 officers near Amersfoort watched for a particular Nissan Navara reportedly transferring illegal contraband between South Africa and bordering Eswatini on January 23rd. Soon a matching bakkie sped past patrolling police, kicking off a short chase when the driver ignored signals to stop.
In a desperate attempt to flee, the smuggler quickly lost control and overturned the car filled with marijuana. After the bewildered driver and passenger climbed out of the wreckage with just minor injuries, officers reportedly found processed cannabis valued at almost half a million Rand.
Further investigation by a specialized Hawks unit revealed the trapped perpetrator as 33-year-old Bonginkosi Manana, while charges were dropped against his accomplice. Facing extensive counts for drug trafficking in organized crime, the accused surprisingly pleaded guilty almost a year later in exchange for suspended jail time.
Despite escaping a lengthier prison sentence, Manana’s poor judgement keeps him from being able to lawfully own weapons. Officials, however, believe that the fact that lifelong imprisonment is avoided still acts as a harsh wake-up call. They expressed their gratitude once more for the vigilant residents who are eager to report illegal activity to prevent such crimes.
