The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) has intensified efforts to enhance South Africa’s weather early warning systems. According to Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa, accurate and timely warnings are vital for empowering citizens to protect themselves and their property from hazards such as thunderstorms, flash floods, lightning, and heatwaves.
At a recent media briefing, Minister Hlabisa emphasized the need for community awareness and cooperation, particularly in response to increasing disaster events across the country. CoGTA’s collaboration with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) aims to ensure that early warnings reach vulnerable areas effectively.
Key actions include:
- Multi-Sectoral Response: CoGTA is adopting an inclusive approach involving government, private sector, and NGOs to foster readiness and mitigate disaster impacts.
- Community Education: CoGTA is conducting campaigns, distributing safety materials, and supporting rapid response teams in high-risk informal settlements to boost local resilience.
- Enhanced Search and Rescue Planning: The government is working with local emergency services, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), and South African Search and Rescue (SASAR) to improve response times and coordination in life-threatening situations.
- Resource Allocation: Unused firefighting vehicles are being redistributed to municipalities, strengthening their ability to manage fire-related emergencies during the summer.
Hlabisa urged citizens to heed SAWS guidance and disaster management tips, stressing that “these warnings are not just routine; they can mean the difference between life and death.” This commitment to public safety reflects a broader strategy to create a well-prepared and resilient South Africa in the face of mounting climate-related challenges.
