January 15, 2025The government has commended the Matric Class of 2024 for achieving an outstanding 87.3% pass rate in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. This represents a remarkable improvement of 4.4% compared to 2023’s 82.9%, demonstrating the hard work and determination of learners, teachers, parents, and caregivers.
“The 2024 results mark a significant milestone in the history of South Africa’s education system, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of democracy,” said the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).
The Class of 2024 faced challenges but emerged triumphant, showcasing resilience. The GCIS highlighted the progress made in education since 1994 when many learners faced limited resources and infrastructure. Today, students benefit from no-fee schools, a globally recognized curriculum, warm meals, and improved access to education.
The government also acknowledged the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted global learning and presented unique hurdles for learners and educators alike. Despite these difficulties, the matriculants persevered, proving that collective effort can overcome adversity.
Efforts to improve the learning environment continue, with the government focusing on eradicating mud schools, replacing pit latrines with modern facilities, and constructing safe, dignified classrooms. The Department of Basic Education has set a deadline of 31 March 2025 to eliminate all remaining pit latrines in schools nationwide.
President Cyril Ramaphosa celebrated the matriculants’ achievements, emphasizing their role in South Africa’s progress during 30 years of democracy. He stated, “These results reinforce our commitment to developing our nation’s most valuable resource—our young people. They demonstrate the resilience and pride of our youth in shaping a better future.”
The President added that the achievements of the Class of 2024 highlight the nation’s strides in dismantling apartheid’s legacy of inequality, poverty, and limited opportunities.
The government encourages the matriculants to carry forward their values of resilience, dedication, and excellence as they embark on new chapters in their lives. The Class of 2024 stands as a testament to the ongoing transformation of South Africa’s education system and the potential of its young citizens.
