September 30, 2024Daniel Maluleka (56) was remanded in custody by the Vaalbank Magistrates’ Court on 27 September 2024, following his arrest on charges of fraud.
The arrest came after an investigation led by the Hawks’ Middelburg-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit. It was revealed that Maluleka had been registered with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) as a Value-Added Tax (VAT) vendor, and had also enrolled for SARS e-filing services. Maluleka, along with two other suspects who are yet to be arrested, allegedly submitted false VAT returns under various VAT reference numbers.
These fraudulent returns led to a VAT refund amounting to R293,958.33 being generated and deposited into Maluleka’s Capitec bank account. As a result, SARS suffered a financial loss of R293,958.33.
After concluding the investigation, authorities issued a J50 warrant, which was executed on 27 September 2024, leading to Maluleka’s arrest. He was subsequently charged and appeared in court, where the decision was made to remand him in custody.
The case has been postponed to 30 September 2024 for a bail application, while efforts to apprehend the other two suspects involved in the fraud are still ongoing.
